About Alan Majchrowicz
Photographing, hiking, skiing and just sitting and observing nature is what defines me. Getting out on the road or trail and making photographs is what keeps me going, inspires me, recharges my spirit, and washes away the troubles of life. I’m much more comfortable photographing a stream or glacier 100 miles away from the nearest town or person than I am in any city or town.
When I was in high school my art teacher said to me that if I wanted to be a successful artist you had to be consumed by a passion for it. All your waking and sleeping thoughts would be about your art. That sounded pretty exciting to me and when I began to break free of the confines of my hometown of Chicago and see true wilderness that notion took hold with an iron grip that still holds firm to this day. The way I work in the field and in the office is a little different than most photographers, I’m not into the technical side at all, for me that gets in the way of the experience of photographing the subject that is inspiring me. I work mainly by instinct and emotion and keep the f-stops and shutter speeds in the background. Years ago I was intrigued by master photographer Minor White who offered a Zen or spiritual approach to photography as opposed to Ansel Adam’s Zone System, although he did teach and employ Adams’ technique. White’s idea was that the photograph should be an experience or “Equivalence” that emotionally engages the viewer. When someone looks at an image they should somehow be drawn into and moved it by it and not puzzle over the what camera or software was used to create it.
Being a professional landscape/nature photographer today is not easy, it never has been and never will be, but it seems to become more difficult and complex with each passing day. Aside from constantly making new photographs part of my job is to navigate through the constantly changing market for images and deliver them to new and existing clients in the best possible manner. For over 20 years I’ve worked to build solid relationships with photo editors art buyers and agencies throughout the world, and many have been with me from the beginning. I believe they keep returning to me because they appreciate my quality of work the constant flow of new images and enjoy doing business one on one with a live person and not a computer.
So relax and take a few minutes to browse through the portfolios and give us a call or send an email, we’d love to help you find that perfect image for your project and begin working together!
